News from the FoodieFront: September
Hooray! In our humble opinion, this is the best month of them all for Chesapeake Foodies. We hope you're
enjoying yours. Left: Glenn Soulia of Inn at Perry Cabin's
entry for crab cookoff.
Developments on the food front: Looks like the Crab Soup Cookoff in Annapolis was
rained out by Hannah and rescheduled for sometime in November, which is a better month for soup, anyway.
Had a
fab dinner the other night at the Front Room at the Imperial Hotel in Chestertown. Nice wine list, craft beers, sweetbreads and mushrooms with a smoky tomato sauce, grouper with capers, scallop
taco with arugula, fried oysters, and creamy asparagus risotto. Lovely! You can buy small plates or large — buy smaller,
have several.
Joanne Richart-Young of Cecil County let us know that Milburn Orchards near Elkton has won a prestigious award; they've been named the National Apple Growers of the year! We visited, and an
interview will be posted soon. Mmmm. Think apple pie, paired with some Chapelle Cheese from Easton.
Speaking of
Easton, we're learning more and more about Easton Market Square, an open-style French market with cafés, wine store and more shops being built in Easton. Exciting! Take a look at
the site. We'll keep you apprised.
Liz Watson, a Foodie favorite, writes to point out that autumn is on the way, and her fabulous crabmeat will scuttle away
with its arrival. While crab season ends Oct. 23rd, she will only be appearing at the Wednesday Easton Farmer's market
on 9/17, 10/15 and 10/22. (This was news greeted with a melancholy sigh worthy of Hamlet...) She adds that crabcakes freeze
well. Make them first and then freeze. We'll have to try it. Liz also sells famous Smith Island Cakes. Visit her at SmithIslandConnection.com
The Maryland Seafood Association is also sponsoring the American Culinary Federation Chesapeake Chef's Cookoff
this Wednesday and Thursday at the Mid-Atlantic Food Expo in Baltimore. Looking forward to the results of that.
And
stay tuned. The grand winner of the Maryland Wine Competition for 2008 should be announced soon.
