2009 Buyer-Grower Meeting

On a drippy day in January, the Maryland Department of Ag hosted a meeting of the minds: Those who produce and those who buy what the producers produce. The object: To provide one convenient venue for all to exchange info and strike up business relationships.

Sorta like speed-dating for the food world.

Very nice and only the leaking roof and the economy put a damper on the festivities. This year's meeting was the best attended ever. Were you there? Our photo gallery is below. I'll be happy to post your names in the captions if you're not listed already. Email: elise@chesapeakefoodie.com and let me know.

Producers included farms from across the state, beef and bison, veal, turkeys, and goat meats. Cheese producers from Cherry Glen and Caprikorn were there. The Wye Mill was representing. There were several reps from our Buy Local folks including Rita Calvert, who also teaches "green" cooking. We also met up with Kilby Ice Cream.

We also talked with chefs from Baltimore, Annapolis and D.C. and interestingly, with people working to set up delivery and distribution between the farms and the restaurants — a much-needed service. It was quite a success. For more, including a Buyer-Grower directory, visit MarylandsBest.net.

Craig Sewell, from A Cook's Cafe, who promotes the buy-local movement, catered the event.
